READ And Both Were Young 107 In this novel by A Wrinkle in Time author Madeleine LEngle Philippa is miserable at an all girls boarding school in Switzerland until she meets the mysterious PaulFlip feels miserable when she first arrives at boarding school in Switzerland Then she finds a true friend in Paul But as the two become and close Flip learns that Paul has a mystery in his pastand to help him discover the truth she must put herself. This novel which was originally written in 1949 is about a young American girl Philippa who prefers to be called Flip who is being sent to boarding school in Switzerland something that Philippa was much less than pleased about Her mother had been killed in an automobile accident a little over a year earlier one that had also left Philippa with an injured leg Philippa s father a well known artist was working on his latest assignment that reuired him to travel freuently and so could not take her along at least that is what he claimed Philippa had her doubts A woman had been pursuing Philippa s father and had been the one to not just suggest but arrange Philippa s entrance into the school just one of the many reasons Philippa did not like her or the school she selectedMost people are familiar with L Engle s A Wrinkle in Time and its seuels will be surprised that this book has absolutely no fantasy elements at all just the struggles experienced by young people attempting to adapt to difficult situations Many of L Engle s works are aimed at the young adult market and certainly there is much to appeal to that market in this novel as well There are also a couple of brief scenes of an adult nature one a description of the brutal murders of a main character s family and another of an attempted assault on another These scenes had been cut from the original publication but were restored by L Engle when the copyright expired
